I first picked up the guitar at age 12 when my left-handed stepfather received a right-handed guitar that he couldn't play. I inherited the guitar and was soon strumming away and learning to play melodies by ear. My father, recognizing my love for the instrument, recommended lessons. When I was 13, I called Clemente Guitar Studios in Worcester and became a student of the great jazz educator Rich Falco.
Studying with Mr. Falco soon led to membership in the Clemente Guitar Ensemble, performing Jazz and Classical guitar pieces in Worcester County for 10 years. I found that playing jazz in Worcester could not satisfy all my playing needs and became involved with a local top 40 band called Blynd Dryve. I took a lesson with Duke Levine and had so much fun that I said to myself: this is the real stuff. I quickly formed the Robin Steiger Group and played blues for 6 years. In the middle of that gig I performed a two-year stint with the 18-piece Milestones Jazz Orchestra from Connecticut and performed in the pit band at the Worcester County Light Opera.
Currently, I am playing guitar in the acoustic duo "The Drunken Uncles”, electric guitar and vocals with the original band "Joe Rockhead" and also with the "John Cusick Group". And, of course, I am teaching at Clemente Music – right where I started!
There are probably few moments that Robin can remember in his life when he did not play the guitar. He has been playing quite simply for his entire life. And when you see and hear him it shows. Very few players anywhere possess as much enthusiasm and excitement as Robin. He has been in quite a few bands over the years and has played it all. Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk, Folk, the list goes on and on. The guy is like a human juke box. It's nearly impossible to stump him! And if he doesn't know it...He'll learn it. Among some of the many bands that he's played with "Bin" most recently rounded out the band Joe Rockhead as the lead guitarist before collaborating with his long time friend Tom to form the Drunken Uncles. He has truely inspired a great many young players and has been teaching guitar for years at Clemente Music in Worcester, MA.
